So I want ideas on what to add to my tank. I was thinking either -3 platys & a couple of shrimp OR -3 green lamp eye killfish & a couple of shrimp So what do you think good combanations? hi, i dont see my little cousin often and she came up from london especially to see us and they leave tomorrow. i dont know how to tell her she's being cruel to her fish. she bought an 8litre plastic pet carrier for her birthday, added tap water, gravel from her driveway (i pulled a face at his as the story got worse, her response was 'dont worry i did wash it and only chose the pretty stones') she went to the pet store and bought 5 2cm feeder goldfish for £7.50 and a 5cm koi carp, she also bought 8 neon tetras but 'surprise surprise' they were all gone in the morning. so... tiny tank. HUGE overstocking. no nitrogen cycle. no heater. no air pump/ stone a lot of chlorine and ammonia. i touched on the subject but was called away to take a phone call, when i tried to change the subject my brother told me to shut up and stop giving lectures. i just mentioned about the filter and lack of oxygen and my auntie said, oh we are doing the water changes and bought some of those oxygen tablets, we put one of them in a day. when she says water changes, she means, get the fish out with a net, put them in the washing up bowl while they take everything out, scrub it with an old toothbrush, rinse everything in hot water and fill the tank back up, then they put the fish back in. how can i NOT end up giving a lecture when they are doing SO much wrong? i dont know what to do =[ my family say i shouldnt say anything and let them find out the hard way because the animals aren't MY responsibility, but i have to say/ do something =/ what though?

Hi, I have recently overhauled my 180L mature tank. Changing the gravel substrate for sand and planting the tank quite densely. Including CO2, laterite etc. Plants are doing well, even with internal filter. In it I have 2 SAEs, 3 small angels, 16 cardinals, 2 bumblebee gobies, 1 sunset platy, 5 glowlight tetras. 6 amano shrimp. However, the tank still seems like it is missing something. I would like a pair of blue rams, but I believe the water in my area is too alkaline for them. Do people think I will be overstocking if I add anything else? If not, then could anybody recommend a fish I could add as a pair, but that won't grow too big (like the rams), that is more suited to my water?

Hi guys, I currently have 64l freshwater tropical tank (about 16g) with surface area width12'' x length24'' x height15'' and with following stock: 1 x veiltail betta 2 x bristlnoses 1 x apple snail 2 x african dwarf frogs 4 x neon tetra 5 x glowlight tetra 6 x black neon tetra Those are together for about 8 months and don't cause any trouble I've recently bought 165l tank (about 43g) with surface area width15'' x length48'' x height18'' and thinking of migrating all exsisting stock into it and then adding following stock: 5 x lemon tetra 5 x rummy nose tetra 5 x cardinal tetra 5 x glass catfish and possibly 1 x kuhli loach Any thoughts on a future set up? will it be overstocked and are there in the list any fish that won't get along with others? Any ideas please comment. Thank you! 4-5 kuhlis seems to be a lot even i I drop glass catfish. Also I'm not sure if kuhlis will dug up all my plants :( And I can't get 2 neons as tetras are sold in 5 here. Glass catfish just looks so cool and I like tetras as well. How about leave glass catfish, no kuhli or maybe same but + 5 neons as well? Water is tested on weekly basis (no sharp spikes of anything occured since it was cycled) I change water about every 10 days once nitrite gets to about 50 (and I use osmosis water only) So it might looks like it's overstocked at the moment but all the levels are fine and fish seems to be happy as they all have their own place (betta eats first, tetras eat together with betta, frogs have their cave and get food in it, bristlenoses and snail eat up all the uneaten food after fish and frogs). Lots of plants for betta and tetras, bogwood and rocks for bristlenoses and snails. To margaretrose: well most of them are tetras and they are community fish and so are bristlenoses. There's only betta (who is very passive and flares only at his own reflection on rare occasions when we leave light on too late) and dwarf frogs who are not exactly fish but seem to be fine with everyone

What would you do in my situation? When I moved to my current yard 3 years ago it was a lovely quiet yard with ample grazing, all year turnout, and included in my livery was full use of indoor and outdoor schools, 1 bale shavings a week and ad lib hay. Now since then, the horse numbers have doubled and we no longer get our bedding included. There is an issue with storage of our own bought in bedding too. Last winter was a nightmare with the increased horse numbers then and since then we have 6 more horses. This winter the plan is to turn out every other day, rather than the every day it has been in the past. We're using the same fields through summer and winter, and I dread to think what the fields will look like next spring after an overstocked winter. There are also more horses than there are stables, but the excess belong to the yard owner so I suppose that in essence this is not my problem. Anyway, four new stables were recently built (still not enough for all the horses though) and it was agreed well in advance which three I would have for my horses. One of them has a troubled past and I agreed with the yard owner that he would have this particular box which was set away from the others to help him feel more safe. So I've painted my boxes and fitted my mats and so on, and just about got them settled in their new stables. Only yesterday yard owner announced that two new liveries are coming so another horse in the main yard is being moved so the two new liveries can be together. The horse being moved kicks the walls when others are around him so he is getting the box that had previously been agreed for my horse, and my horse is being placed in the middle of the main yard, right in everyone's way, which couldn't be a worse place for him. Despite expressing my concerns, its been decided that this will be the new arrangement. There are lots of other niggling things, such as "yard politics" where previously everyone got on well (but add more people and you add more problems) and myself and 3 other liveries are seriously considering leaving. What do you all think? DIY Livery is £172 a month. Its £172 per horse. We have voiced our concerns and tried to resolve things that way, but nothing has been done and things are only getting worse. There is a nice yard nearby which is £100 per horse, per month for the same (hay included, indoor and outdoor school, turnout all year etc) and I am seriously considering moving foxhunter - the show went well! My little TB got 3rd in the ex racer class :)

this is not the same tanks as related by my other question about sand. In my other tank i have noticed that my tiger barb is constantly facing the ground and occasionally has a green shine to him. He is the last one so he may be being bullied by the other tank mates but i have not seen this. Would put some more barbs in but they are the only fish i have lost and as it was my first tank i got a bit carried away and overstocked a bit. I'm really confused about my fish dying, I need experienced fish keepers to help me please. Before people go on about water quality and overstocking, I know all this, I used to work in an aquarium and now work in a pet shop. I know all about it...but anyway...I have a 125L tank. I had 4 neons, 4 male guppies and a siamese fighter (the guppies and fighter got on fine). Anyway on monday I bought some more fish, 2 male guppies, 2 neons and 2 cherry barbs. But when I came home 3 of my neons had died. The next day another neon had died but I still have my 2 new neons. A new guppy had also died and then the other new one shortly died after. I thought at first maybe the figher had killed the new guppies but then this morning my fighter was dead too. Last night one of my old guppies had lost half his colour and this morning had lost it completely. I think he is dead now as I can't see him in my tank. I've checked the water quality and everything is fine, except maybe some very very slight ammonia but not enough to just wipe out so many fish so quickly. The tank is fully oxygenated with a filter and an air pump. The tank wasn't over stocked as I could still fit more fish in there. I've not seen any signs of visible disease. What could be happening to my fish??? I don't think the new fish were sick, I got them from the shop I work at and the neons started to die before I got home with the new fish. Nope, no new ornaments or anything copper. I don't have any nitrites or nitrates in my tank, pH level is fine. The tank has been running for 7 months and is at 25 degrees C. I meant the old fish I already had in the tank had started to die when i was at work but obviously didn't know because I wasn't at home so when I brought some new fish home I only noticed then. The new ones didn't die before I got home. There might be a disease from the old fish but nothing I can see visibly, they all look healthy which is why I don't understand why they're popping off so quickly.

I have kept pond fish for years in my little pond in my garden but lately they have been staying at the bottom, at first I thought all my fish had disappeared or someone had taken them as some are quite big, then I found them just lying at the bottom, still alive but not bothered about feeding or anything , haven't seen them at the top for a couple of weeks now, the water is cleaned by a filter pump and is quite clear and my plants seem to be OK I thought they may be breeding as I have had babies in the past but it seems to be taken a long time, I don't want to go stirring the pond up and distressing them unnecessarily but I am now getting concerned, and no they are not dead or overstocked Pool about 200 gallons and about 10 goldfish in, had some of them for over 10 years so good age, Checked pool water and it OK, water is cold, N Wales, but even when sun is on it they lie low, have seen movement today so maybe things are looking up. Resolved Question: Something wrong with my aquarium, cloudy water at first now AMMONIA!?
I have had my aquarium for 3 years now, it has been well established, not overstocked and I have had 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and some nitrates. One day out of the blue the water went all cloudy (milky like) and I have had very high ammonia levels! I have already lost two of my fish and I cannot understand whats wrong...I keep doing water changes, I have cleaned both my filters (internal and external canister) in case they were too dirty (I cleaned them in aquarium water and please keep in mind that I am experienced with aquariums). Could this mean that my beneficial bacteria colonies have been lost? My nitrite levels are at 0 though, which means that bacteria are doing something..Any help or experience with this kind of situation? yeah, filters were cleaned at different intervals...

Resolved Question: what do you think of my tank?
i have 4 guppies, 1 dwarf gourami in a 12g, heavily planted, pH 7.5, GPH 110-120, varied diet of blanched veggies, staple flake and blood worms, plenty of swimming room and hiding places, lights are on for 10-14 hours a day, temp 79F, i do weekly 25% water changes and add de-chlorinator and they have no signs of sickness, they were added to the cycled and stable tank on wenedsday and today is friday. BTW i got them from overstocked tanks, the guppy tank was 75L with about 300 guppies, dwarf gourami came from a goldfish tank where he was being bullied by a betta, the guppies and gourami dont fight, infact the guppies give food to the gourami!! how long do you think they will last? I'm gonna add 4 cories in a week, they will be fed algae wafers every other day, i will miss out a few days every now and then

Ok I am looking for the final installment to my 60 litre fish tank. Please don't post about the science of the tank etc I just want a discussion about species of fish. I want to put in some strikingly beautiful fish that are great! I have at the moment these species: Platy Cardinal Tetra Dwarf Gourami Dwarf Catfish Harlequin Rasbora Before you ask the tank is well oxeganated!Planted, IT has a filter! I change the water every week! AND IT IS NOT OVERSTOCKED. Trust me I'm an experienced aquarist and have had few casualties in my career. There are a lot of people on here that think they know about fish keeping just because they understand the 1 inch p gallon rule. I've got knew sor you, that rule EXCLUDES the tails of fish, (which can be 1 third of the length) Please don't make stuff up.. I just want suggestions of a nice fish !!!! Ok heres some extra details: firlstly some maths, for those of you who I am geussing do not own a calculator! but actualy first, the 1 inch per gallon rule does exclude the caudal fin! It says this in every fish handbook I have. Example, RSPCA Care for your Tropical fish: "Avoid Overcrouding: to work out how many fish can be kept safely in an unaerated tank, the rule is 2.5cm of fish (1inch) (excluding tails) for every 75 sqcm (12 inches) of surface area." According to this rule my tank is fine... Thanks for the tips on guppies guys, I've seen some nice ones on youtube. Ok my tank looks EMPTY. Seriosly EMPTY, the 1 inch per gallon rule may say my tank is overstocked, but this is why it is rubbish. My tank is very well aerated with a good filter and is cleaned regularly. The 1 inch rule applies to unaerated goldfish bowls etc. People really follow this rule blindly..... My freind is the lead fish expert for the Pets at Home store of staffordshire. He knows about fish.. Corydorus Hastatus Please read elizabeth K's comment, my point exactly! For example my 2cm dwarf cory cats have almost no impact on the bio of the tank etc. Right numbers Platy x 1 (baby one in a seperate tank) Harlequin x 4 Cardinal x 5 Honey Gourami x 2 Cory x 4 These are the numbers. Angel fish are far too big for my tank, no offence butI can't take that comment seriously. Guppies look nice but I understand they produce a lot of waste... What about German Blue Ram x 2? I was only thinking about another pair or solitary, not a shoal. I did understand cardinals liked a bigger school, but the shop sold them £1.99 each or 5 for £6
